The Explorers Program, launched in January 2014 with support from the OPWDD (Office for People With Developmental Disabilities) offers weekly cooking, enrichment activities, and socializing. Even during the pandemic the Explorers met by way of video conferencing. Head Chef Susan Blacklocke teaches and engages the group in preparation and cooking of a meal. A nutritionist and vegan, Ms. Blacklocke works with the participants to create healthy and tasty dinners and desserts. Only Organic ingredients are used and this hands-on cooking experience provides a well balanced, healthy way of eating.
After dinner, the group is introduced to professional artists who come prepared to explore the world of art, using different mediums. The East End of Long Island is home to many incredible artists who share of their time and often open their studios to the Explorers, always a unique and exciting experience. The evenings are not just limited to fine arts - Interpretive Dance, Poetry, Yoga, Meditation, or Zumba are often featured.
Educational field trips, recreational activities, or a dinner in a nearby establishment are incorporated as well. The group travels to arts and cultural centers including Parrish Art Museum (Water Mill), Guild Hall (East Hampton), The Watermill Center, Southampton Cultural Center, or Longhouse Reserve (East Hampton). Focusing on lively enrichment, the Explorers Program has proven to be a stimulating and socially productive environment for all participants. For further information or to join please contact Jacqui Leader @ 631-678-7560.
